Hirelings
NPC horses, helpers, and anything in between can be considered Hirelings. Hirelings do not have any stat blocks and thus do not participate in combat encounters. You can directly control a number of Hirelings equal to your Reason Skill Score. Some examples of Hirelings are as follows:
- Workers have Skills (typically one), they add their listed bonus to the roll against the Challenge Clock.
- Horses can give you 5 Encumbrance to carry Equipment with, and reduce the Travel Challenge Clock segment by one.
Multiple Hirelings may provide their bonus to any given Challenge Clock. Every Hireling has a cost that must be paid when they are utilized in Projects. If the cost is unpaid, they will likely defect, refuse, or die.
Outside of specific circumstances, Hirelings should not be included in combat. The exception to this comes with Hirelings that explicitly list a statblock that are being used in the defense of an area.
NPC Statblocks
Come in two variations: Fodder and Formidable. Fodder NPCs do not have an Encumbrance, just a single static HP pool and only use one reaction to being attacked (evade/block/counter). They are intended as wolves in a pack or a simple guardsman. Formidable NPCs have an Encumbrance, but typically not a full one. They are a bandit king or cave bear.
NPC Morale
If Fodder NPCs witness the death of a formidable NPC or character that is leading them, they must pass a Willpower Save with a DC equal to 10 + the total damage of the killing blow. Else, they surrender or flee.
Fodder Conversions
Certain features apply Wounds that would not be fitting for a Fodder NPC to receive. In these cases, anytime they would be afflicted by them directly, convert them as follows:
- Fatigue = Make a Morale Save; DC equal to the roll that inflicted the Fatigue, else 10.
- Minor Wound = 5 damage
- Moderate Wound = 10 damage
- Major Wound = 15 damage
